A globally connected law firm is seeking an experienced Associate / Senior Associate to join its growing Technology, Cyber & Privacy practice in Melbourne.

This is a standout opportunity for a lawyer who wants a genuine cyber and data privacy focus, including hands-on incident response work, regulatory engagement and complex advisory matters for major insurers and corporates. The role sits within a high-growth practice that regularly advises on significant domestic and international cyber incidents, with strong APAC and global collaboration.

The Opportunity

You’ll work closely with partners and clients on front-line cyber and data privacy matters, including incident response, data breaches and regulatory notifications, alongside broader privacy compliance and emerging digital regulation work.

The practice advises leading Australian and multinational clients and plays a central role in coordinating cross-border cyber incidents, working with international teams across multiple jurisdictions. This is not a peripheral cyber role — you’ll be involved in real incident response matters from day one, while also contributing to the broader growth of a strategically important practice area.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Responding to cyber incidents and data breaches for insurers and corporates
  • Advising on regulatory notification obligations and managing regulator engagement
  • Supporting pre-incident preparedness and post-incident response
  • Conducting privacy and data compliance audits and providing ongoing compliance advice
  • Advising on Australian privacy, data protection, cyber security and related regulatory frameworks
  • Working on emerging digital and technology regulation, including online safety, platform regulation and AI risk
  • Collaborating with international cyber teams on cross-border incidents
  • Managing matters efficiently, supervising junior lawyers and contributing to knowledge-sharing
  • Supporting the continued growth of the cyber and privacy practice

About You

This role will suit a lawyer who brings:

  • Around 3–8 years’ PQE (flexible depending on experience)
  • Demonstrated experience in cyber incident response and/or data privacy compliance
  • Strong knowledge of Australian privacy and data protection laws
  • Experience advising under time pressure in incident response scenarios
  • Excellent drafting, communication and stakeholder management skills
  • A commercial, solutions-focused approach
  • A collaborative mindset and interest in building depth in cyber and privacy law
  • Exposure to general commercial or technology matters (helpful but not essential)

Why Consider This Role?

  • A true cyber-focused role within a high-growth practice
  • Regular involvement in complex, international cyber incidents
  • Exposure to insurers, major corporates and sophisticated regulatory matters
  • Strong partner access and clear career development in a specialist area
  • Flexible, inclusive working culture with genuine support for wellbeing

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
