About Gramian

Gramian Consultancy is a boutique consultancy specializing in IT professional services and engineering talent solutions. With a strong background in software engineering and leadership, we help companies build high-performing teams by matching them with professionals who truly fit their needs.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Rust Backend Architect to contribute to an AI training project focused on production-grade Rust development, backend architecture, and complex systems engineering. You will solve and validate technical problems involving APIs, persistence, asynchronous processing, concurrency, performance, and service reliability. You will also build reproducible implementation and testing environments, assess architectural decisions, and ensure backend solutions meet production-quality standards. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on Rust programming skills with proven experience designing, debugging, and evaluating reliable backend systems.

SENIORITY: Senior / Architect-Level Engineer

LANGUAGE: Strong written and verbal English

LOCATION: Remote — Worldwide

START DATE: Immediate availability preferred

Key Responsibilities

  • Solve and validate Rust backend engineering problems involving APIs, service behavior, data persistence, concurrency, performance, and reliability.
  • Translate functional requirements, performance targets, and failure-handling expectations into reproducible implementation and testing workflows.
  • Design, review, and assess backend architectures for correctness, scalability, maintainability, and production readiness.
  • Prepare Rust crate workspaces, configuration files, test fixtures, dependency services, databases, and containerized development environments.
  • Develop and validate test cases that assess expected behavior, edge cases, failure scenarios, and system reliability.
  • Debug complex backend issues and identify weaknesses in implementation, architecture, or system design.
  • Evaluate asynchronous and concurrent systems, including potential race conditions, resource contention, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Produce clear technical explanations and implementation artifacts that meet project specifications and support AI training and evaluation.
  • Maintain consistent output quality while meeting weekly submission requirements and project deadlines.

Requirements
  • Strong hands-on proficiency in Rust, demonstrated through substantial professional, research, or open-source software development.
  • Strong understanding of backend service design, APIs, data persistence, and production software architecture.
  • Practical knowledge of asynchronous programming, concurrency, error handling, and performance optimization in Rust.
  • Experience analyzing and resolving complex backend correctness, scalability, reliability, or performance problems.
  • Ability to translate technical requirements into working implementations, reproducible tests, and verifiable outcomes.
  • Experience with Rust workspaces, dependency management, test environments, and backend development tooling.
  • Strong debugging, analytical reasoning, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to explain architectural decisions and technical findings.
  • Availability to contribute approximately 15 hours per week and meet the project's minimum weekly task requirements.
  • Ability to begin work within 24–48 hours after completing onboarding.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
