Your role:

The Project Safety Manager is responsible for supporting the engineering operations of the Vehicle Tactical Systems technical and engineering competence centre (VTS-ECC) with a focus on safety engineering, product regulatory and environmental compliance (HSE-P).

The role spans responsibility across the domain in the four businesses of Protected Mobility Vehicles (PRV), Australian Munitions (AM), Integrated Weapon Systems (IWS) and Explosive Ordinance Services (EOS), and is responsible for applying safety engineering techniques, driving safety process, policy and reporting across the segments in support of engineering transformation of the VTS Engineering Competence Centre.

This is an initial 12 month fixed term contract based at our office in Melbourne CBD.

Some key responsibilities:

  • Support VTS in developing and delivering solutions (products, support equipment, systems, and services) that are adequately safe for their intended purpose to eliminate or reduce harm to people, equipment and the environment,
  • Apply the system safety management system by monitoring, identifying and proposing improvement required to ensure ongoing best practice,
  • Contribute to continuous enhancement of the systems safety engineering capability across the VTS business, by recommending optimisation of tools, processes, techniques and methodologies. Thus, ensuring the application of systems safety engineering ‘best-practice’, through optimal execution of assigned tasks,
  • Supporting the embedding of an enduring system safety capability and culture. This includes facilitating on the job mentoring to personnel involved in system safety activities and decision making.

On day one you will come with:

  • Tertiary qualification and/or extensive experience in System Safety / Risk / Reliability / Systems Engineering or in a related discipline including, but not limited to Engineering, Computer Science, Human Factors, Transport
  • Sound understanding and experience of the Systems Safety Engineering process in a safety critical industry such a Defence, Land Domain, Manufacturing, Vehicles, Railway, Aerospace, Nuclear or Oil & Gas:
  • Familiarity with reducing safety hazards and risks so far as “reasonably practicable” (SFARP), Risk matrices, Energy Systems Hazard Analysis and Hazard Controls Hierarchy,
  • Familiarity with relevant safety standards e.g. SAFETYMAN - Defence Safety Manual (SafetyMan), MIL-STD-882E, Land Materiel Safety Manual (LMSM) and Work Health and Safety (WHS) Acts etc.  
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively apply system safety techniques and tools and conduct hazard analyses and risk management activities - including the facilitation of workshops,
  • Technical aptitude (strong problem solving/analytical skills) and ability to comprehend and appreciate product engineering and requirements and constraints across a range of mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering domains to identify and resolve technical challenges, reporting and make informed decisions,
  • You are familiar with management and engineering tools such as DOORS, Polarion, TFS, JIRA
