Principal Engineer – NetBank Rebuild (Digital 2.0) - (Nextjs & GraphQl)

We’re entering a critical delivery phase of our NetBank rebuild (Digital 2.0) — one of the largest digital transformations at CommBank. This is a high-impact, in-flight transformation program where strong technical judgement, delivery focus, and engineering leadership truly matter.

NetBank supports millions of Australians every day. As a Principal Engineer in Digi 2.0, you will:
Provide technical leadership across multiple squads within a large-scale platform rebuild.
Initially lead and support ~10 engineers, helping them grow, align, and deliver.
Partner with Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, Principal and Chief Engineers to drive technical alignment and execution.
Ensure high standards of engineering quality, reliability, performance and operational excellence.
Guide teams through a critical go-live phase, balancing delivery pace with long-term platform sustainability.

Technical Skills Required
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:
Developing 3-tier application both on-premises and on cloud covering:
Frontend: React, Typescript, Next.js (preferred).
Backend: .Net core, C#, Java, Node.js.
Database: SQL and NoSQL experience (both admin and usage).
Scripting languages (i.e., TypeScript, Go, Python, GraphQL).
CI/CD tools (i.e., GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus).
Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Pulumi, CloudFormation.
Infrastructure as a Code framework: SST essential.
Automation Quality Engineering (Unit Testing, Regression Testing).
We’re interested in hearing from people who
Have a proven track record in developing large-scale digital applications utilizing modern technology stacks.
Provides experiences across full stack, full cycle software engineering with a focus on front-end solutions e.g. Next.js, React, Typescript.
Possesses practical experience in operating microservices within a DevSecOps framework.
Have experience in addressing Tech Debt using a commercially focused and pragmatic approach.
Can identify, gain support, and ensure execution of technical direction and strategy for the business.
Can demonstrate design and implementation of solutions to complex problems, including onboarding and migrating to new tooling as well as removing obsolete systems and code.
Encourages risk-taking and constructively challenges the status quo, while influencing stakeholders and building diverse and inclusive teams.
