    Where the team fits in

    The Principal Engineer, will join the FS Engineering Leadership Team, which is within our Product & Technology team located in our Financial Services business (serving the Mortgage Choice & PropTrack brands). Our purpose is to offer home finance and other financial services to those using mortgagechoice.com.au & realestate.com.au for their property search. Given the opportunity of the size of that audience, the FS vision is to integrate a consumer’s property search with finance though a world class digital seamless process. This will be achieved by building innovative consumer search and property finance application experiences that integrate the mortgage distribution channels of digital, phone and face to face. 

    What the role is all about

    • As a Principal Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in defining and overseeing the solution architecture and design of our systems.
    • While your primary focus will be on architecture and setting the benchmark for technical excellence, this is also a deeply hands-on position. You'll work closely with teams to prototype solutions, contribute critical code, and tackle complex engineering challenges using agile practices.
    • You will be a key driver in improving our systems, ensuring our platforms adhere to enterprise-grade standards and maintain optimal health. You will help shape strategic decisions, advising where to invest effort to improve system quality and optimise the processes that support them.
    • Design high-quality, cross-squad solutions in collaboration with a diverse set of stakeholders, ensuring interoperability across systems in the value chain.
    • Engage externally to share expertise and showcase REA’s leadership in engineering and innovation, further building the organisation’s reputation.
    • This role involves aligning technical strategies with the Head of Engineering, Engineering Managers (EMs), and Product Managers to influence squad direction. You will ensure product strategy and technology remain closely aligned and participate in product discovery by delivering early solution validation to steer impactful innovation. You'll be guiding the work of multiple engineering squads within our tribes.
    • Coach and mentor experienced engineers, enabling the growth of future technical leaders in engineering and architecture within your domain.

    Who we’re looking for

    • Experience: 8+ years in software engineering and architecture for enterprise-scale systems.
    • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in .NET and TypeScript/React. Deep understanding of event-driven microservices and API-first design on AWS and GCP. Experience delivering containerised and serverless workloads.
    • Business Alignment: Ability to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
    • System Performance: Deep understanding of performance optimisation for distributed systems.
    • Integration & Architecture: Expertise in designing domain-aligned boundaries and establishing architectural standards. Experience integrating CRM platforms (HubSpot, Salesforce), enterprise identity providers, and customer data platforms with event pipelines.
    • Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical, creative and problem-solving skills.
    • Leadership & mentorship: Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across teams, without direct authority. Strong track record of coaching and mentoring engineers.
    • Communication: Exceptional ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders, including senior leadership and non-technical audiences.
