About the role:
You will own Xero's capabilities for high-performance (near-realtime and streaming) data platforms that empower teams to use data from across our systems safely and at scale. You will also collaboratively lead initiatives to grow platform capabilities across Data, Data Science, AI, and Engineering, providing the tools to evolve Xero's technical architecture in alignment with our strategic vision and product strategy.
As a member of the technical leadership team, you will use your engineering expertise, understanding of Xero’s business, and the Data and Science organisation to drive improvement of the engineering system.
You will build situational awareness through relationships fostered across the organisation with diverse groups, particularly the wider Engineering & Architecture community, Science, Platform, Design, Customer Experience, Security and Agile at all levels.
This knowledge will be used to ensure your Data and AI Platforms group is focused on the highest impact opportunities to improve our systems of work, and is approaching them in pragmatic, safe and incrementally deliverable ways. You will work to manage ambiguity and uncertainty, finding ways to drive forward momentum, whilst enabling a safe environment for innovation.
You will act as a coach and mentor for the Senior and Staff Engineer cohorts. You will work to identify future Principal Engineers, and will take part in interviews of engineering talent (IC and M track). You will act as an advisor to the engineering leaders of Xero in areas such as technical concerns, architecture and engineering process.
You will role model sustainable engineering excellence, driving engineering-wide processes, visibly taking part in the engineering community and setting the bar for quality and continually improving practices. You will share your knowledge widely internally and externally via blog posts, talks and written documentation.Success in this role:
In order to be successful in this role, you will:
- Collaborate with Principal Engineers and leadership across the organisation to shape and steer the architecture and engineering direction of Xero
- Foster a sense of community and develop the capabilities of the our engineering teams, in partnership with the Senior Principal Engineers team
- Cultivate the skills and knowledge of our line engineers, extending these benefits to the broader engineering community, aligning with the Xero Capability Framework
- Ensure consistent execution of the PE role across Xero to enhance operational efficiency and strategy attainment
- Advocate for the interests of the engineering community, championing and driving improvements in engineering practices
- Oversee technical decision-making processes, ensuring alignment with the engineering strategy
- Strive for operational excellence, aiming for bulletproof operations
