What You’ll Do

Sustainability, External Affairs & Legal - Government Relations maintains positive relationships with government agencies, ensuring that Telstra's voice is heard and that Telstra is aligned with government policies.

The Policy Advisor role within the Sustainability, External Affairs, and Legal Team is critical to delivering Telstra’s organisational wide Policy roadmap and framework

As Policy Advisor, you will support the Public Policy function within Telstra, including to identify, evaluate, prioritise and track progress on our key policy priorities. You will collaborate across the business to understand, collate and align on policy positions which enable the company to deliver on its objectives. You will also develop and implement advocacy plans for Telstra’s key policy priorities to help achieve identified outcomes.

You will monitor government policy development and reform processes, identify and evaluate potential new risks or opportunities, undertake research and analysis, and engage with key stakeholders internally and externally.

The Policy Advisor role aligns with relevant internal stakeholders, Telstra’s business objectives and commercial strategy, to provide high-level strategic advice on policy and advocacy issues relevant to the delivery of Telstra’s objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build Positive and constructive relationships with external stakeholders, including government, regulators and industry and consumer bodies.
  • Providing expert, trusted, and strategic policy advice on issues affecting Telstra’s delivery of its Connected Future 30 strategy.
  • Identify, analyse, and manage policy issues and risks that arise from Telstra's external environment that may have an impact on Telstra's commercial interests and reputation, and working with other parts of the business to ensure all aspects of the issue (including cross-business issues) are addressed and managed for the benefit of the company overall.
  • Work closely with the Sustainability, External Affairs, Legal, Risk and Compliance and Comms teams to develop, coordinate and implement advocacy plans for Telstra’s identified policy priorities.
  • Lead the research and analysis of economic, social and political trends to identify emerging policy issues and trends, evaluate implications for Telstra and factor into our advocacy strategies.
  • Work to support the public policy function within Telstra, including implementing appropriate internal governance and reporting processes.

About you

To be successful in the role, you must have:

Essential

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, economics, public policy, and/or another relevant discipline.
  • Experience working in a policy development/advisory role (ideally 5+ years) in government or in the private sector.
  • Self-motivation and autonomy to represent Telstra in policy roundtable and forums present and possible solutions clearly and confidently to Senior Management and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with Senior Management and our key external stakeholders.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent advocacy and communication skills (written and oral).
