The Legal Counsel / Senior Legal Counsel is part of the Legal Team, headed up by our Chief Legal Officer & Company Secretary. The REA Legal Team (affectionately known as the Legal Eagles) are a trusted and valued partner of the REA business. We work closely with all our lines of business and are at the forefront of our most critical decision-making processes.

What the role is all about 

The Legal Counsel supports the Legal Team in the following ways:

  • Provide legal advice and recommendations that are pragmatic, commercial, timely and cost effective. Areas of advice include general contracts, data, financial services regulation,  AML/CTF Act & Rules, privacy and spam;
  • Identify legal risk and work closely with the business to deliver advice that balances legal risk with commercial objectives;
  • Draft and review agreements and other legal documents;
  • Be a team player in assisting the Legal Team to support REA’s Financial Services business (which includes Mortgage Choice and Campaign Agent;
  • Promote REA company values and encourage teamwork through multi-business and key stakeholder collaboration; and
  • Be accountable for identifying and managing long term risks associated with decisions and proactively develop plans to manage these within the scope of your role.

Who we’re looking for 

  • Law degree, current Legal Practicing Certificate or eligible for a current Legal Practicing Certificate;
  • Minimum 3 years post admission experience in either private practice or in house (in-house experience or secondment experience preferred);
  • Ability to provide commercially focused legal support, particularly in the area of financial services. Areas of expertise should include consumer credit, AML/CTF and payment systems regulation. Expertise in privacy and/or spam  would be looked upon favourably;
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills with both legal and non-legal stakeholders;
  • Ability to manage a large range of matters in a fast-paced environment; and
  • Ability to contribute effectively to a high-performing team.
