About the team

  • The Legal & Regulatory team sits within the Sustainability, External Affairs, Legal, Risk and Compliance function (SEAL RC) in Telstra. SEAL RC engages with our external stakeholders to support the business, shapes and influences outcomes, builds and maintains relationships with government, regulators and media, and helps mitigate legal and regulatory risk.  As a key component of SEAL RC, the Telstra Legal team is not like other in-house teams. The role with us

We are seeking an M&A and corporate advisory lawyer (4-8 years PQE) with experience advising on and negotiating strategic acquisitions, divestments and other corporate transactions, both domestic and international.  The role will suit a lawyer looking for the next step in their career, seeking an autonomous role at the cutting edge of some of Telstra’s most strategic projects working with, and learning from, an exceptional team of lawyers and specialists.

Key responsibilities

As a Legal Counsel - M&A and Corporate Advisory, you draw on your expertise within the legal domain, combined with your evolving breadth of experience to deliver against the following responsibilities:

  • Give legal advice that is clear, commercial, fit-for purpose and tailored to the audience based on your understanding of the strategic priorities, legal requirements and current and emerging risks
  • Effectively manage an appropriate volume of legal work of a complexity commensurate with your experience by being well organised, delivering on agreed commitments and prioritising competing demands
  • Provide support on strategic acquisitions, divestments, commercial agreements and other corporate transactions, both domestic and international, including by identifying legal issues and risks that may have a significant impact on the business, providing expert legal guidance and project management, applying critical thinking, sharing informed insights, and implementing innovative solutions that achieve strategic objectives and resolve complex legal issues
  • Authentically engage, build, and maintain trusted and collaborative working relationships across SEAL RC team, as well as internal and external stakeholders, by assisting them with legal matters, processes and standards
  • Apply a continuous improvement mindset when providing legal support to clients, by sharing great ideas and contributing to initiatives which help drive productivity improvements and maximise client experience outcomes
  • Demonstrate continuous learning by expanding your depth and breadth of experience in your practice area, including staying up to date with new and emerging legislation, case law and regulations. You also adopt and develop proficiency in technology tools and an agile way of working
  • Apply your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to identify legal issues and risks that may have a significant impact on the business, working collaboratively with team members to resolve them promptly
  • Have a customer first mindset
  • Provide training and updates to internal clients and develop precedents and tools to enhance client legal knowledge and expertise in collaboration with other lawyers.

About you

To be successful in the role, you'll bring skills and experience in:

  • Qualifications: Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and admitted to practice in Australia
  • Relevant Post-Qualified Experience (PQE) (4-8 years desirable)
  • Capability:
    • Corporate M&A and advisory experience in a law firm
    • Drafting and negotiating complex M&A transaction documents and other commercial contracts, in domestic and international contexts
    • Strong legal project management skills and commercial acumen built through leading complex M&A transactions and other complex matters
    • Ability to build strong business relationships, engage with and influence senior stakeholders and explain complex issues clearly and concisely
    • Enjoy problem solving and demonstrate an adaptable and flexible mindset
    • Ability to manage projects autonomously and under pressure, as well as balancing and prioritising workload
    • You will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of M&A projects and matters, both domestic and international, as well as broader corporate transactions and general corporate governance and corporate advisory work as required by an ASX listed company 
    • Leverage your experience and technical know-how to provide high quality, independent and strategic legal advice to deliver strong business outcomes while meeting legal and regulatory requirements.
