Anduril’s Legal Team seeks a Legal Counsel (Commercial and Compliance) to support Anduril Australia, its operations and its CEO and Executive Chairman. This is the first full-time Legal Team position in Anduril Australia. This role will work from Anduril’s Sydney office and be part of Anduril’s Deal Team, which supports the full lifecycle of Anduril contracts and includes government contracts lawyers, contract managers, and proposal managers.
ABOUT THE JOBAnduril’s Legal team seeks a Legal Counsel (Commercial and Compliance) to join Anduril Australia, with a focus on the full spectrum of Australian government contracts issues as well as to support compliance issues, including export controls. The Legal Counsel (Commercial and Compliance) will provide legal oversight to proposals, procurement, and product development, giving legal guidance to existing business areas and crafting legal and business strategies. Legal Counsel (Commercial and Compliance) will be part of the Anduril Legal Team, which provides legal support across all of Anduril Industries. The Legal Team partners closely with customers, outside counsel, and business partners across the organisation, including the Executive Chairman and CEO of Anduril Australia, to support business development and day-to-day legal operations.
Anduril is a fast-growing company at the early stages of growth. Consistent with this fast growth, members of Anduril’s Legal team must be resourceful, creative, and eager to take ownership of complex matters. The Legal Counsel (Commercial and Compliance) role will require pragmatism, creativity and resourcefulness to navigate the Australian government’s complex procurement and compliance laws and regulations, with a singular focus on helping Anduril deploy its path-making technology into operational settings for Australia, the United States, and their allies. In addition to helping capture and execute new government deals and helping manage aviation, spectrum, and export control compliance, you will work on all other aspects of Anduril’s business, from negotiating license and services agreements, to disputes and litigation, to handling intellectual property, compliance, property and employment matters. Experience across all of these areas is not expected, but a willingness to learn and adapt is.
The Legal Counsel (Commercial and Compliance) will be expected to take responsibility for significant projects, which will have a material impact on Anduril and Anduril Australia. - Be a key member of Anduril’s small, dynamic Legal Team, with a specific focus on supporting Anduril Australia.
- Drive customer growth by executing new government contracts and growing existing ones. Use your expertise in Commonwealth procurement law to help the Business Development, Proposal, and Engineering Teams efficiently capture new contracts, grow existing contracts, and set up follow-on opportunities for future contracts. Assist in the strategy development for new business.
- Assist in managing relationships and engaging with procurement office representatives within Government agencies. High-trust professional relationships with Government contracting and procurement offices are critical to Anduril’s continued success, and you will be called upon to develop and foster these relationships throughout your tenure.
- Provide legal counsel and day-to-day management of the entire acquisitions lifecycle. Oversee and evaluate major proposals, monitor large contracts, lead or assist in key negotiations, resolve performance issues, identify risks and mitigations, and ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.
- Work on all legal aspects of Anduril’s business, from negotiating license and services agreements, to disputes and litigation, to handling intellectual property, compliance, and employment matters. You will represent the legal team in relationships with outside counsel, vendors, engineers, executives, customers, and regulators.
- Develop software contracting approaches for delivering software to the Department of Defence and negotiate those agreements with contracting officers and program counsel.
- Anduril adopts a solution focus and can-do attitude to all challenges and components of the business and this role will assist to structure advice to achieve company objectives whilst fully complying with the legal, ethical and procedural requirements.
- Travel throughout Australia will be required.
- 5+ years of experience with complex Commonwealth Procurement
- An understanding of the Australian government procurement process; commonwealth contracting vehicles and types eg: ASDEFCON as well as intellectual property issues
- Familiarity with export controls, including jurisdiction and classification analysis and license applications and/or work on Australian government contracts matters, preferably with a law firm or the government (more senior lawyers are also encouraged to apply, the position may be adjusted based on experience)
- Familiarity with Australian IP laws and regulations, including patents, copyright, and trade marks
- Familiarity with Australian spectrum management laws and regulations
- Familiarity with Australian maritime and aviation laws and regulations
- The judgment and initiative required to own multiple projects from end-to-end, whether guiding engineering teams through the lifecycle of an export license or handling unexpected legal issues that may arise in defence or start-up companies. The role will transverse a wide range of issues on a daily basis.
- Strong written communication and interpersonal skills and ability to operative in a flat organisational structure
- Quick learner, with low ego, and the ability to contribute to the broader start-up legal function, including topics that may be completely new to you: everything from IP and litigation to financing, securities, compliance, and employment law, depending on the needs of the day. Strong people skills will enable you to work with the broader Anduril Legal team to collaborative and efficiently solve problems.
- A qualified Australian lawyer
- Must be able to obtain and hold an Australian NV2 security clearance
- Pre-law school professional experience
- Combination of law-firm and in-house or government experience
- Experience working with the Australian Government while in private practice
- Experience with engineering, software, or other technology
- An interest in the law and policy of defence acquisitions and/or in the law and policy of AI, UAV, spectrum and trade control with opinions about what is right or wrong in either field and how to fix it
- Experience with internal patent disclosures and filings with outside patent counsel
- In-house experience with HR and employment matters
The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only.
