At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. Simply said, we help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers, working together to shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.
Commerce, named one of Australia’s Coolest companies by Anthill Magazine, is looking for a Lead Software Engineer, specialising in front-end technologies to work across multiple domains in the rapidly evolving e-commerce landscape.
The Commerce Engineering team is on a mission to build the leading SaaS ecommerce platform. Our global team of engineers works from our Austin, San Francisco, Kyiv and Sydney offices and are focused on building the right product for our customers in the right way.
We work closely with other engineering teams, product owners, designers, business representatives and external partners to build a platform where we can easily and securely deliver new and alternative user experiences. This is a highly impactful technical leadership role: you’ll be the go-to person for front-end decisions across multiple Commerce domains.
Our teams support both B2C and B2B commerce, creating seamless experiences for everyone who interacts with our platform: from shoppers browsing and buying, to buyers managing orders and accounts, and merchants running their stores. Our front-end engineers work on rich, highly interactive interfaces that power storefronts, checkouts, and merchant tools, ensuring they’re fast, accessible, and intuitive across a wide range of use cases.
We believe strongly in the value of good design and good testing, and we rely heavily on tools like Sentry and Kibana to know what’s going on across the 60,000+ merchants we serve. Your work will shape experiences that handle high traffic, rapid iteration, and a diverse global merchant and shopper base.
What You’ll Do
Partner across multiple engineering teams to align front-end approaches, reduce duplication, and ensure a cohesive user experience platform-wide.
Drive front-end architectural standards and patterns across teams and domains, ensuring maintainability, scalability, and long-term consistency of the platform’s user interfaces.
Shape the front-end developer experience by improving build pipelines, testing strategies, and performance monitoring to support fast iteration and high-traffic usage
Work closely with engineers, designers and product managers to define stories, assess scope and technical concerns, and set the standard for code quality through thoughtful reviews, mentoring, and establishing best practices for front-end development.
Help teams establish and maintain their “technical vision”, which outlines the technical direction, values, and architectural decisions guiding their work
Work with product leadership to influence roadmap direction, balancing delivery speed with sustainable technical investment and long-term quality
Ensure that technical decisions support our goals of quality, performance, scalability, reliability, availability and security
Lead the design and implementation of new features with a focus on testability, extensibility, and maintainability, guiding others to do the same
Who Are You
You’re a trusted professional with at least 6 years of experience building amazing products. You have ideas and opinions and you’ve tested and refined them through your work
Education: Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS.
You’re an excellent communicator. You can explain not just your ideas, but the reasons behind them, and you’re comfortable to do that in person, over Slack or email, or in a code review
You work closely with product and design to shape and scope work, weigh trade-offs, and drive projects from initial concept through to delivery. You handle product scope, shifting requirements, and technical depth, turning complexity into well-structured outcomes
Extensive professional experience with TypeScript and front-end frameworks like React, and deep experience designing and evolving scalable front-end systems; shaping design systems and shared UI frameworks, defining state management strategies, and guiding architectural decisions that balance performance, maintainability, and developer productivity
You’ve influenced front-end practices across multiple teams or products, driving consistency, shared solutions, and reducing duplication
You have a good understanding of API design
You have a solid understanding of modern programming and design principles. You write tested, maintainable code that you are proud of and you are committed to keeping code quality high
You are passionate and knowledgeable on modern technologies and tools, without being biased toward a specific technology. You’re more interested in finding the right tools and patterns for the job
You lead by example: owning your work, holding yourself accountable for results, and mentoring engineers through coaching, pairing, code reviews, and design guidance, helping unblock complex technical challenges across teams
You enjoy a team culture that’s collaborative, curious, and occasionally light-hearted
