YOUR MISSION

About the Organisation & Role:

You will be part of the Consumer Experience Engineering organisation responsible for building fast, intuitive, accessible and premium digital experiences across web and mobile. The organisation owns the web & mobile platforms, engineering delivery for consumer-facing journeys, shared design systems, performance, accessibility and AI-native engineering practices that help product teams deliver consistent, reusable, high-quality consumer experiences across the globe.  

The Lead Engineer (Web) is responsible for defining frontend architecture, providing technical leadership, and delivering scalable, reliable, accessible, and high-performing consumer-facing digital experiences.

What you will do:

  • Lead the architecture, design, development, and evolution of large-scale consumer-facing web applications.

  • Define frontend engineering standards, architectural principles, reusable patterns, and development best practices.

  • Provide technical direction for solutions built using ReactJS, TypeScript, Next.js, and GraphQL.

  • Design scalable, modular, maintainable, secure, and reliable frontend application architectures.

  • Lead frontend system design and evaluate architectural trade-offs aligned with business and engineering goals.

  • Define API-first and headless architecture patterns for integrating commerce, content, and enterprise platforms.

  • Partner with Product, Design, Architecture, Quality Engineering, and Platform teams to deliver optimized consumer journeys.

  • Drive frontend performance engineering with a strong focus on Core Web Vitals and real-user experience.

  • Define strategies for rendering, code splitting, lazy loading, asset optimisation, caching, and bundle management.

  • Apply CDN and edge technologies to improve application performance, scalability, and global availability.    

  • Ensure digital experiences meet WCAG accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.

  • Partner with UX and Design teams to develop reusable components and evolve enterprise design systems.

  • Support feature flagging, experimentation, A/B testing, and data-driven optimisation of consumer journeys.

Mentor frontend engineers and provide technical guidance on architecture, design, coding, testing, and troubleshooting

YOUR TALENT
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with significant expertise in frontend application development.

  • 3+ years of experience leading a technical capability, project or engineering team.

  • Strong hands-on expertise in ReactJS, TypeScript, JavaScript, Next.js, and GraphQL.

  • Deep understanding of browser fundamentals, rendering behaviour, web standards, and frontend application lifecycles.

  • Proven expertise in frontend system design, application architecture, and modern engineering patterns.

  • Experience designing scalable, modular, reliable, secure, and maintainable frontend applications.

  • Strong knowledge of server-side rendering, static generation, client-side rendering, and hybrid rendering strategies.

  • Strong understanding of application state management, data-fetching, caching, and synchronisation patterns.

  • Experience designing reusable components, shared libraries, and scalable frontend platforms.

  • Strong understanding of secure frontend development, authentication, authorization, and consumer data protection.

  • Proven experience improving Core Web Vitals, page-load performance, responsiveness, and runtime efficiency.

  • Strong knowledge of CDN, edge computing, browser caching, asset optimisation, and content delivery strategies.

  • Strong understanding of consumer journeys, conversion optimisation, personalization, and digital experience quality.

  • Practical knowledge of WCAG standards, semantic HTML, keyboard accessibility, and assistive technology compatibility.

  • Experience with experimentation platforms, feature flags and A/B testing.

  • Strong understanding of design systems, reusable component libraries, responsive design, and UX engineering principles.

  • Proven ability to influence architecture and engineering practices across multiple teams without direct authority.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, technical leadership, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.

  • Experience designing or delivering headless and composable commerce solutions is preferred.

  • Proven ability to drive architectural decisions, influence technical direction and mentor engineers.

  • Experience using coding agents, LLMs or AI-assisted engineering tools to improve software delivery and developer productivity.

  • Experience in eCommerce, retail, or consumer digital products is strongly preferred.
