We have a fantastic opportunity within our Purchasing Team for a Junior Category Manager in Training!The Junior Category Manager in Training role will participate in an established 12-month program involving rotation through all category teams within the Kogan.com Purchasing Team to support building expertise in category management principles, best practice and category ownership.


During each of their category rotations, the Junior Category Manager in Training will work with the Head of Product Pillar to manage assigned categories, support in sourcing projects, partner with suppliers, support excellence in category performance and optimal range for customers, and product performance metrics. 


Upon completion of the 12-month program, the Junior Category Manager in Training will be equipped with the skills required to apply and be considered for a Junior Category Manager position within the Purchasing Department. 


This opportunity would be a great fit for a recent graduate who is looking  to start their Purchasing / Buying career, an Assistant Category Manager / Buyers Assistant who is ready to step up or a candidate with a commercial background who is looking to grow their eCommerce experience and transition into a Purchasing / Buying career.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Category Management: Efficiently manage assigned categories in Exclusive Brands and Third Party Brands and actively manage products and brands, taking ownership and treating them as your own business.
  • Sourcing and Procurement: Identify opportunities for range expansion and sourcing new products, run competitive tenders between suppliers and actively negotiate the best possible trading terms and prices for every order.
  • Supplier and Stakeholder Management: Build and manage internal and external relationships to support the product lifecycle, category operations and optimisation 
  • Performance Optimisation: Actively manage and monitor sales and inventory levels to achieve company, team, and individual goals and KPIs. Drive profitability through competitive pricing and cost optimisation 
  • Marketing and Promotion:  Manage eDMs for assigned categories to promote products and ranges and partner with the Marketing team on key promotional activity and strategy. 
  • Process Improvement: Actively look for new and better ways of working to support more efficient and effective processes

To be successful in this role, you should be:

  • University Degree qualified in a relevant field (Commerce, Business or similar)
  • Practical Retail experience will be highly regarded, but not essential
  • Comfortable building and maintaining effective relationships, through exceptional communication and engagement
  • Highly analytical and possess commercial nous, being able to recognise opportunity and make quick decisions for the best commercial outcomes, so that we can offer market-leading pricing to our customers.
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Being agile and adaptable is key to success!
  • A whiz with Microsoft Excel (we’re talking VLOOKUP and pivot tables, not SUM and AVERAGE - and we will test your capabilities).
  • Tech savvy and able to use various IT and cloud-based tools to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Ready to challenge, be challenged, and work within our highly disruptive business model.
