Job TitleHead of Engineering - Belong

Job Summary

Job Description

Belong's purpose is to help more Aussies participate in the digital world

Our lives are pretty online these days, and most people just want a simple, affordable way to get connected. So, we put the good stuff first (hello, unlimited home internet and mobile data banking). We don’t tie our customers down (seeya later, lock-in contracts). And we’re only a call, chat or email away if our customers need help.

Backed by Telstra

Belong began operating in 2013. The plan was to start a dynamic challenger brand company that could offer the usual telco things at a better price. That meant no stores or new phone deals, but the same great security and coverage – using parts of the Telstra mobile network.

Our customer-centric culture runs deep

Over the past two years we’ve invested heavily in transforming our culture, and we’re rock solid in our vision to become Australia’s leading value telco. For us, simplicity is key. And our team of rockstars aren’t afraid to do things differently to get things right for our customers.

Focus of the Role

As Head of Engineering, you will play a pivotal part in shaping Belongs technical direction, ensuring that our development processes are optimised for efficiency, scalability, and rapid feature delivery while maintaining quality. You will lead our engineering teams to uphold high coding standards, enforce rigorous pull request processes, and ensure the quality of the features we release. Additionally, you will drive the continuous evolution of our development practices to support our growth and long-term success.

What We Offer

  • Performance-related pay

  • Access to thousands of learning programs so you can level-up

  • Purchased annual leave scheme

  • Flexible additional days off

  • Additional 30% off Telstra products and services

  • Toolkit provided (laptop + mobile phone + plan paid for)

What You’ll Do

As the Head of Engineering at Belong, you will lead technology teams of teams to achieve outstanding results across our business. You will join the Belong technology leadership as a critical enabler in realising and driving the enterprise strategy, reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer.

The technology team at Belong support a wide variety of assets including our Web and Mobile (iOS and Android) platforms. We’ve just completed a multi-year digitisation program that’s modernised our technology stack, so you’ll have the opportunity to work with cutting edge technology, while leading a high performing engineering team to deliver initiatives such as identity management, product offer management and our exciting new NBN high speed program of work. We recognise that our success is only possible thanks to our people so we’re all about empowering our team to do their best work, through flexibility, learning, development and collaboration.
You will be responsible for implementing modern architecture and engineering practices that deliver outstanding value to our customers, aligned with business objectives to deliver high-performing and scalable solutions.

Key areas of the role will be:

  • Line management, mentoring, coaching, and assisting software engineers with application design, development, testing, and release of software

  • Attracting, recruiting, retaining and developing software engineering talent

  • Working with the domain architecture team to align specific solution designs with the target end-state architecture, balancing strategic and tactical priorities

  • Overseeing and refining software development processes, ensuring adherence to best practices in code quality, testing, and deployment

  • Working in partnership with the product owners and delivery leads to identify and shape opportunities and support customer outcomes through managing technology priorities and changing workforce requirements.

  • Managing technical dependencies across the squads and ensuring work is optimally sliced to deliver technical solutions that are consistent and aligned with strategic business & technology priorities

  • Providing thought-leadership during the shaping/feasibility process to ensure the optimal initiatives are prioritised and appropriate technology investments made

  • Acting as a role model by maintaining and developing your own expertise and knowledge to ensure you bring the latest thinking to your role and helping to empower others with that knowledge

  • Driving low total cost of ownership through addressing technical debt, while ensuring a balance between innovation, resilience and customer experience

  • Taking an active role in managing vendor performance and technology delivery to ensure that agreed technical capability, time and cost outcomes are met

  • Proactively identifying design and delivery risks and leveraging lessons learnt / external expertise to implement solutions that resolve performance issues and drive high-value outcomes (e.g. productivity, customer experience and/or profitability)

  • Fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement

About You

You are an experienced engineering leader who is passionate about software development best practices and fostering high-performing teams. You excel at mentoring and guiding engineers, refining development processes, and ensuring that best practices are consistently applied across the engineering teams you lead.

You lead by example and have a depth of understanding of software development practices from your background in software engineering. You understand the importance of pragmatic technology choices—embracing innovation while prioritising reliability and scalability.

To be successful in the role, you'll need:

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate your people in both own team and cross functionally across the organisation

  • Consultative skills that enable identification of business issues, and recommended actions to remediate issues

  • Strong facilitation skills to achieve business outcomes

  • An ability to operate at senior executive levels and interact with C-Level stakeholders

  • Experience with complexity and conflict inherent in a creative and empowered workforce

  • Ability to influence outcomes beyond your span of control and brokering consensus among stakeholders with conflicting needs and expectations

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
