About this opportunity
Ericsson seeks a researcher with a solid academic background (PhD or equivalent) and possible some years' hands-on experience in optical systems and photonic technologies to conduct high-impact research applying these technologies to transport networks and radio systems. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to research projects-often in collaboration with technology partners, universities, and other Ericsson teams-driving innovation, solving complex technical challenges, and helping to translate advanced photonics concepts into practical network and radio solutions.
What you will do
• Investigate, design and evaluate optical solutions for applications in transport networks and radio systems.
• Develop models, prototypes, and experiments to validate concepts and quantify performance.
• Collaborate with internal teams, industry partners, and academic groups to accelerate innovation and transfer results to product development.
• Produce patents and publish results, when in line with the research strategy, in journals and conferences, and represent Ericsson in relevant forums and consortia.
• Make innovation in collaboration with key stakeholders and push for technology transfer towards radio products and transport networks.
• Work with real-world constraints - performance, scalability, robustness, and energy efficiency
• You will be trusted with meaningful responsibility from day one and supported by senior researchers who are leaders in their fields.
The skills you bring
• PhD (or equivalent) in one or more of the following: photonics, optical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
• Some years of experience in optical transmission systems and technologies, optical networking, integrated photonics, or related areas applied to communications networks.
• Good communication and collaborative skills
• Professional proficiency in Japanese
• It would be beneficial to have some experience in PoC, demos or prototyping.
• At least basic knowledge of AI technologies.
What Sets You Apart
• A strong research mindset and the ability to generate novel ideas
• Motivation to publish, patent, and influence future standards
• High level of ownership, analytical thinking, and problem-solving ability
• Willingness to continuously learn and work across adjacent domains
Why Ericsson Research

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene
Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
