Executive Consultant - Mining Advisory: Environmental & Social

About the business and the role

SLR comprises over 4,500 staff across our global regions, with 35+ Technical Disciplines covering Engineering, Environmental, Scientific and Advisory Services. In the Asia Pacific region (SLR APAC), SLR has over 1,000 employees located throughout 24 offices. Our globally integrated Mining Advisory Group includes Geologists, Mining Engineers, Metallurgists, Geotechnical Engineers, Civil Engineers, and Environmental Scientists with extensive experience in the mining and exploration industries. 

With team members in Australia, USA, Canada, Europe and Africa, SLR’s Mining Advisory Group provides advisory services to the mining sector at all stages of project development from exploration and resource evaluation through scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, financing, permitting, construction, operation, and closure and rehabilitation. We provide support to major mining companies, mid-caps, junior mining and exploration companies, financial institutions, governments, law firms and individual investors on the technical and commercial aspects of mineral property development and have extensive experience in all commodities and mining areas of the world.

We are seeking candidates to join us as an Executive Consultant – Mining Advisory in our Environmental and Social team. This senior technical and strategic role is responsible for leading and delivering complex, high‑value consulting assignments across the entire mining lifecycle. We we flexible across any of our offices in Australia for the right person.

As a trusted advisor to global mining clients, you will spearhead environmental and social performance input into feasibility studies, independent technical reviews, due diligence reviews, operational improvement programs, and public reporting engagements—including Independent Environmental and Social Consultant Reports, Competent Person Reports, and Ore Reserve statements. What would help the team further, is someone with a biodiversity / ecology background and essential that you have experience applying IFC Performance standard 6 - biodiversity to projects.

This role offers the opportunity to work across multiple commodities, mining methods, and international jurisdictions, applying your deep industry expertise to guide strategic decision‑making and deliver high‑impact outcomes.

Job tasks and responsibilities

Lead and Deliver Strategic Mining Advisory Projects

  • Manage and execute environmental and social performance input into feasibility studies, due diligence assignments, ITRs/ITERs, and operational improvement programs.

  • Ensure all deliverables meet technical, commercial, and regulatory standards (JORC, NI 43‑101, SK 1300 etc.).

  • Deliver clear, innovative, and commercially relevant insights aligned with client needs and project scope.

Provide Senior Technical Expertise

  • Apply extensive multi‑commodity and multi‑jurisdiction experience to develop credible, high‑quality advice.

  • Act as a subject-matter expert, providing peer review, specialist judgement, and technical oversight.

Participate in Multi‑Disciplinary Project Teams

  • Participate in cross‑functional teams spanning geology, mining engineering, processing, geotechnical, ESG, and financial disciplines, providing the focal point for ESG expertise.

  • Manage project budgets, schedules, risks, and reporting to ensure timely and high‑quality delivery.

Engage Senior and Executive-Level Stakeholders

  • Communicate complex technical insights simply and effectively.

  • Build trusted long‑term relationships and demonstrate strong commercial acumen.

Drive Business Development and Industry Presence

  • Leverage your strong industry network to identify opportunities, develop proposals, and secure new work.

  • Represent the organisation at conferences, forums, and industry events.

  • Contribute to thought leadership through publications, presentations, and professional engagement.

Skills and experience

Education & Professional Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental or social science, or environmental engineering or related discipline (required).

  • Postgraduate qualifications (e.g., Environmental Engineering or Science, Social Sciences, Finance or Business Administration) are highly desirable.

  • Chartered Professional status (AusIMM Fellow or equivalent) strongly preferred.

  • Active membership with AusIMM, EIANZ or equivalent professional body.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • 15+ years’ experience in mining environmental and/or social performance management across open pit and/or underground operations.

  • Expertise in environmental and social impact assessment, environmental and social due diligence, environmental and social management systems and working familiarity with lenders environmental and social performance requirements, including but not limited to Equator Principles and IFC Environmental and Social Performance Standards.

  • Specialisation in an environmental or social performance field is desirable (e.g. ESIA, geochemistry and closure, ecology, climate change and greenhouse gas emissions) however the successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to be able to provide advice over a broad range of topics and issues relevant to mine development, operation and closure.

  • Proven experience contributing environmental and/or social performance content into: Scoping, PFS, FS, and Due Diligence studies, Independent Environmental and Social Consultant Reviews and/or Independent Technical Reviews for banks/investors.

  • Broad exposure to a range of commodities and global mining jurisdictions.

  • Strong understanding of environmental and social performance reporting and regulator frameworks and standards (e.g. Australian and state environmental laws, NGERS, EP4, IFC PSs, GRI, IRMA, ICMM, TSM, TCFD, ISSB, ASRS)

  • Understanding of mineral reporting and regulatory frameworks (JORC, NI 43‑101, SK 1300).

  • Independent technical expert reports and providing high level review

Client & Commercial Capability

  • Proven ability to secure and deliver consulting projects.

  • Skilled in proposal development, client negotiation, and project scoping.

  • Strong track record of repeat business, client advocacy, and industry influence.
