This role is responsible and accountable for all aspects of people and delivery leadership and management of one or more cross-functional software engineering teams and the outcomes required from those teams. The role is a hands-on people and technical leadership role. Having a technical background with expertise in one or more specialisations such as “Software”, “Data”, “Support & Reliability”, and knowledge of one or more business domains, the role actively contributes to the capability and capacity of the team within their functional area of expertise. 

The role will coach, motivate and support individuals in the team to perform at their best, individually and as a high performing team. Using consistent ways of working, the ETL actively engages with people outside the team to leverage knowledge and capabilities ensuring effective and efficient delivery of required outcomes. The role acts as a champion of change, leading the continuous improvement in thinking and actions, in line with the wider technology strategic objectives and goals.

  • Manages and contributes to the teams' sustainable continued delivery of quality outcomes.

  • Manages poor or underperformance, recognises, rewards and promotes excellence. 

  • Collaborates with members of the team and other teams to ensure knowledge is shared and key person risks are reduced or eliminated. 

  • Participates in the planning, estimation and prioritisation of work. Ensures the team is involved at relevant points to create collective ownership and improved quality of plans. 

  • Ensures software is transitioned to production appropriately, takes accountability for the software of the team in the runtime environment. 

  • Promotes, supports and improves the ways of working of the team, actively participates and drives the continuous improvement of work execution. Ensures alignment to the Iress strategy and methods. 

  • Drives and promotes simplicity, quality, speed, scale, value and innovation within the team. 

  • Executes all people management functions, including leave management, acquiring new people as necessary, ensuring team and people health. 


 
What you will bring:
  • Considers commercial aspects of decisions across teams and when making or participating in design or implementation decisions. 

  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and collaborate with other functional teams to ensure consistency and quality outcomes. 

  • Experience of working with product management in product and solution design. 

  • Solicits the involvement of others to build a sense of ownership and demonstrates the confidence to act quickly and decisively, while balancing risk. 

  • Can empathise with people and clients appropriately, uses that empathy in effective decision making. 

  • Will test the status quo and enjoys thinking about and implementing innovative ways to solve problems - and in doing this is not afraid to fail! 

  • Can motivate and inspire in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

  • High EQ - self aware, self regulated, motivated and empathetic, with great interpersonal skills.

  • Communicates in a clear, concise and unambiguous manner, and does so regularly and to a variety of audiences. Has experience communicating with clients and users in regard to strategy, deliverables, issues or risks. 

  • Is hands-on and has an entrepreneurial spirit and style. Consistently becomes personally involved in all elements of leading the function, while ensuring the team has the freedom and autonomy to achieve goals and outcomes. 

  • Demonstrates and is fluent in modern business and technology practices, including management and leadership methods. Has been exposed to coaching and mentoring of these practices. 

  • Experience in risk management principles, understands the impact of technical decisions on software risk and makes appropriate decisions. 

  • Proven track record in software design, understands in depth the software delivery lifecycle, importance of automation and the impact of technical debt to teams and software outcomes. 

  • Experience in supporting production software and has empathy for clients, users and team members who experience negative outcomes as a result of low-quality software.
