About the Role

At ROLLER, Engineering Managers are a new role with the opportunity to help shape the future of engineering. Our Product Team is split into several squads and as part of this role, you will manage the Engineers and QA members of two or three squads, driving collaboration across teams to create a fun and engaging environment. Working closely with Tech Leads, you’ll foster a high-performing culture and ensure an outstanding developer experience.

This is an opportunity for a hands-on leader who is passionate about both tech and people, who is ready to make a significant impact in a dynamic, high-growth environment!

This role gives you the flexibility to adopt a hybrid work approach, maintaining a true work/life balance. This includes working in our centrally located South Melbourne office 3 days per week and having the option to work from home outside of these days.

 What You'll Do

  • Lead and Mentor: Guide, coach and develop a team of Engineers and QA members, fostering a productive work environment. Set clear goals, provide regular feedback, and support your team’s professional growth.
  • Initiatives: Work closely with the Tech Leads and VP of Engineering to pursue improved processes, team effectiveness and developer experience.
  • Talent Acquisition: Partner with the Talent Acquisition team to attract and hire top tech talent while building awareness of ROLLER in the development community.
  • Performance Management: Conduct regular 1:1s and oversee the completion of performance reviews, offering clear feedback and opportunities for professional development.
  • Resource Alignment: Compare priorities across squads to ensure alignment with higher-level goals, reallocating resources if needed.
  • Technical Leadership: Stay informed about the infrastructure, architecture and codebase. Engage in technical discussions and, where necessary, get on the tools to stay up to date.

About You

  • Experienced Leader: You have a proven track record in people management and team leadership, with experience in mentoring and developing Engineering Teams.
  • Hands-On: Strong technical background, with experience in building and running scalable backend systems. Familiarity with Agile methodologies and modern software development practices is essential.
  • Strong Communicator: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You can clearly articulate complex ideas, advocate for your team, present to wider audiences and are comfortable having hard conversations.
  • Passionate & Driven: You are self-motivated, adaptable and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Your enthusiasm for tech and team leadership drives you to continuously improve and inspire those around you.

Perks!

  • You'll get to work on a category-leading product that customers love in a fun, high-growth industry! Check our Capterra and G2 reviews.
  • 4 ROLLER Recharge days per year (that is 4 additional days of leave that we all take off together as a team to rest and recuperate)
  • Engage in our 'Vibe Tribe' - led by our team members; you can contribute to company-wide initiatives directly. Regular events and social activities, fundraising & cause-related campaigns...you name it. We're willing to make it happen!
  • Team Member Assistance Program to proactively support our team's health and wellbeing - access to coaching, education modules, weekly webinars, and more.
  • 16 weeks paid Parental Leave for primary carers and 4 weeks paid Parental Leave for secondary carers.
  • Work with a driven, fun, and switched-on team that likes to raise the bar in all we do!
  • Individual learning & development budget plus genuine career growth opportunities as we continue to expand!

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
