The Role
As the Institutional Investor Content Strategist at Morningstar, you will be responsible for developing and leading a cohesive content strategy specifically tailored to an institutional audience. This position requires an experienced professional who can create original content as well as edit existing research reports and thought leadership pieces that effectively engage and resonate with asset owners. You will work closely with various teams across the organization to identify relevant topics, data, and trends for content development that will elevate Morningstar's brand awareness among institutional investors. This role will also play a key role in shaping the annual Morningstar Sustainable Investing Summit for institutional investors.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Global Content Strategy, this role will have a dotted line to the Head of Client Solutions for Institutional Investors. To foster continuous collaboration, at least three days in the office per week is required.
A portfolio of published articles or written work is required.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Institutional Content Development: Write and develop compelling thought leadership pieces, white papers, long-form articles, blogs, video and podcast scripts, and other content focusing on relevant topics and trends for asset owners. Conduct interviews with industry professionals, analysts, and subject matter experts to produce insightful and in-depth analysis. Utilize existing research, thought leadership, and proprietary data to create a consistent pipeline of content assets for institutional audiences across various platforms such as web, social media, newsletters, and events.


  • Editorial Process: Develop and oversee an editorial calendar specifically for asset owners. Manage multiple projects simultaneously and collaborate with stakeholders to review, approve, and deliver high-quality content within set publication deadlines for industry events, media sponsorships, and client meetings.


  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Build effective relationships with marketing, sales, research, editorial teams, and other key business unit stakeholders to keep track of ongoing content development for the institutional audience. Identify opportunities for collaboration that align with business strategies and objectives.


  • Data & Analytics: Work with the marketing analytics team to measure ROI, track performance, and make data-driven decisions for editorial planning and content development targeted at institutional investors.


  • Governance & Compliance: Ensure adherence to regulatory and compliance standards, brand guidelines, and content governance protocols.


Key Results for Success in This Role:

  • Brand Building: The thought leadership produced by this role will play a crucial part in our go-to-market strategy for increasing awareness and consideration of the Morningstar brand among asset owners. The successful candidate will help shift the perception of Morningstar from being primarily focused on retail investors to being viewed as an industry thought leader and trusted strategic partner for institutional investors.


  • Stakeholder Management: As this role sits within Central Marketing, the individual will need to collaborate closely with various business units to develop, review, and approve all content targeted at asset owners. Building strong relationships with leaders, subject matter experts, and analysts across different teams who may have competing priorities, along with effective influencing skills, will be key to success in this role.


Qualifications:

  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in financial journalism, investment writing, B2B content marketing, corporate communications, or investor relations preferably in the asset management or investment management space.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required (English, journalism, marketing, or related field preferred). Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) or CFA designation a plus.
  • Expertise: Deep understanding of financial markets, investment concepts, asset management industry, and/or the institutional investor ecosystem.
  • Expertise: Excellent technical writing skills, including an ability to establish a narrative based on conceptual and data-focused themes, with minimal rewriting by editors.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong ability to interpret complex data, derive insights, and communicate findings to executive stakeholders.
  • Enterprise Acumen: Proven success working in a global, multi-product, matrixed organization, navigating complex structures, engaging in collaborative problem solving, and driving alignment across diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite including in-depth knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel with the ability to pick up new systems and software easily.
