The opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator with strong PostgreSQL and Linux expertise to join our Infrastructure Managed Services team.
You will help ensure critical database environments remain reliable, secure and optimised. Your work will span database administration, performance tuning, backup and recovery, high availability and cross-platform support, including Microsoft SQL Server.
This role would suit a hands-on database specialist who enjoys troubleshooting complex issues, improving performance and working collaboratively across application and infrastructure teams.
What you’ll do
- Install, configure, upgrade, patch and administer PostgreSQL database environments.
- Monitor database performance and proactively resolve bottlenecks, slow queries and capacity issues.
- Design and manage PostgreSQL backup and recovery strategies aligned with agreed recovery objectives.
- Administer Linux systems supporting database workloads, including performance tuning, storage management and security hardening.
- Provide Level 2 and Level 3 support for PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server incidents.
- Manage database security, including user access, roles and auditing.
- Support Microsoft SQL Server environments across instance administration, patching and backup management.
- Contribute to database migration and consolidation projects.
- Maintain database documentation, configuration records, schemas and operational runbooks.
- Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams on database design and integration requirements.
- Contribute to disaster-recovery planning and testing.
What you’ll bring
- Approximately five to ten years of database administration experience.
- Strong hands-on PostgreSQL administration experience, including replication, vacuuming, query optimisation and extension management.
- Solid Linux administration capability across RHEL, CentOS or Ubuntu, including shell scripting and performance tuning.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration, including Always On, backups and SQL Server Agent jobs.
- Experience with PostgreSQL high-availability technologies such as Patroni, repmgr or pgPool.
- Strong SQL query-writing skills and experience analysing performance using EXPLAIN plans.
- Experience with PostgreSQL backup tools such as pgBackRest, pg_dump or Barman.
- Familiarity with infrastructure monitoring and database alerting tools.
- Experience working within an ITIL-based service management environment.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and stakeholder communication skills.
- Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement based in Ballarat.
Bonus points if you have
- PostgreSQL Professional or Microsoft SQL Server certification.
- Experience with pgBadger, Nagios or Prometheus.
- Advanced PostgreSQL configuration and performance-tuning experience.
- Automation experience using shell scripting or other relevant technologies.
