We are looking for a Cloud Network Engineer who is passionate about scaling Cloud Networking services to join our Edge Networking team. The Edge Networking team owns the cloud infrastructure, tooling, and automation that enable global customers of Atlassian products like Jira, Confluence, Trello, and Bitbucket to have a reliable network experience.
The ideal candidate is a technical leader who is aware of current industry trends (particularly those related to networking, proxies, and reliability). You have experience working in teams that balance operational and project workloads, and love to share your knowledge with others. We'd love it if you brought a deep understanding of modern Cloud Networking infrastructure, programming expertise, operational experience, and a desire to change the status quo. We're looking for an engineer who can analyse and help improve our services and processes to get us to an even higher level of reliability, performance, scalability, and cost efficiency. This role reports directly to the Senior Engineering Manager of Edge Networking.

This role is for a Cloud Network Engineer for the Edge Networking team. Common responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Writing code to automate and operate our large proxy fleets across multiple globally distributed regions.
- Responding to operational events, including applying mitigations, and identifying follow-up actions to increase reliability.
- Contribution to large projects to deliver new networking features to unblock company-wide features and projects.
- Design of new network features and implementations.
- Investigation work to proactively improve security, reliability, and cost efficiency of our services.
- Contributions to mentoring and hiring.
On your first day, we'll expect you to have:
- 3+ years experience operating high-availability, fault-tolerant, scalable, distributed software in production: building monitoring, tweaking dashboards, defining alerts, writing run-books, etc.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (AWS components like EC2, CloudFormation, CouldFront, S3, SQS, or equivalents, e.g. in GCP / Azure).
- Understanding of Cloud Networking concepts like load balancers, proxies, and CDNs.
- Backend engineering experience in one or more prominent languages such as Python, Go, and Rust.
- Familiarity with Unix / Linux operating systems.
- Engagement to debug, improve code, and automate routine tasks.
- Excellent communication skills in written and verbal forms, and an ability to communicate complex technical issues to a range of technical and non-technical audiences (management, peers, clients).
- An ability and desire to mentor and coach engineers.
It would be great, but not mandatory if you had:
- Experience in microservice architectures.
- Experience working with open-source proxies like Envoy, Nginx, and Squid.
