  • You are a bold engineering leader with regulated industry experience
  • We are modernising legacy systems and build secure, scalable tech
  • Together we can help to protect the community from financial crime

Do work that matters

We’re building the bank of tomorrow, today. That means modernising and rebuilding our legacy monolithic environment over the coming years. As a Chief Engineer in Corporate Technology, you’ll be empowered to shape the future of engineering across platforms that underpin our finance, risk, compliance, and regulatory operations. With nearly half of all Australian transactions flowing through our systems, this is your opportunity to lead engineering efforts that directly contribute to keeping Australians safe from financial crime.

See yourself in our team

Corporate Technology is the process engine room supporting fulfilment across CBA’s Retail, Commercial and Institutional customers, while also running regulatory operations and Group-wide regulatory projects. You’ll be working on platforms that are critical to the bank’s integrity, resilience and compliance posture.

If you’re passionate about leading innovative technology initiatives that create meaningful customer and internal experiences, this is your chance to drive lasting impact.

Our goals are clear:

  • Build systems to detect threats and take action early
  • Utilise real-time intelligence to identify economic crime
  • Operational excellence through data and AI

What you’ll bring

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Thrive on creating solutions to solve complex problems
  • Bring deep expertise in one or more of the following domains: fraud prevention, financial crime detection, or cybersecurity
  • Have successfully led teams through multi-year builds, ideally in a similar role at enterprise level or as a CTO at a scaleup or ASX 200 listed organisation
  • Have hands-on experience guiding teams in a full cycle model, ensuring security is integrated from the start
  • Take a pragmatic approach to technical debt, balancing commercial needs and engineering priorities
  • Can identify, secure support for and execute on a clear technical direction and strategy
  • Encourage risk-taking, challenge the status quo constructively, and foster collaboration across diverse, inclusive teams

This is a hands-on, highly technical role. You’ll thrive if you have experience across:

  • Building applications both on-premise and in cloud environment
  • Frontend: React, Angular, mobile native
  • Backend: Java, Typescript, .NET Core, C#
  • Databases: Structured and unstructured, from both admin and usage perspectives
  • Designing and implementing large-scale systems
  • Collaborating with DevSecOps teams to ensure best practice engineering
  • Ensuring quality with automated testing (unit and regression
  • Designing secure, observable solutions with a focus on application security
  • Maintaining code quality through peer programming, code reviews, and automated release management
  • Leading teams and mentoring engineers to grow their technical and leadership capabilities.

Our people bring their diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives to build a respectful, inclusive and flexible workplace. We are working hard to recruit people who represent the diversity of our customers and our society. If you're excited about this opportunity but you don't meet every single requirement, or your experience doesn't align perfectly, we still want to encourage you to send in your application. You may just be the perfect candidate for this opportunity or another within CommBank.

If you're already part of the Commonwealth Bank Group (including Bankwest, x15ventures), you'll need to apply through Sidekick to submit a valid application. We’re keen to support you with the next step in your career.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
