We're looking for a commercially sharp, community-minded Category Manager to join our Purchasing team at Kogan. You'll own the end-to-end commercial performance of our Hobbies & Collectibles portfolio - from Games Workshop and Trading Card Games through to scale models, Gunpla, statues and Pop! Vinyl.

This role will be handling one of the largest and most dynamic portfolios for our Mighty Ape business, with full P&L ownership and one of the most passionate customer communities in New Zealand retail behind it. This role is based in Melbourne with minimal travel to New Zealand required.

In this role you'll be responsible for:

  • Own the end-to-end commercial performance of the Hobbies & Collectibles portfolio, including sales, gross profit, net profit, inventory turnover and ROI.
  • Develop and execute short and long-term category strategies that grow market share against specialist hobby retailers, global collector marketplaces and direct-to-consumer licensor stores.
  • Own range architecture across a wide SKU set, setting clear entry and exit criteria for brands and licences and rationalising lines that aren't working.
  • Build and deepen senior relationships with licensors, manufacturers and distributors, and negotiate allocations on supply-constrained product.
  • Grow the hobby community around Mighty Ape, making sure scarce product reaches genuine fans rather than resellers, and helping plan and run community events.
  • Own the pre-order strategy end to end, from announcement-day listing speed through to delivery, including long-dated collectible pre-orders.
  • Manage the full product lifecycle from release pricing through to clearance, acting decisively on aged and slow-moving stock.
  • Design and run a forward-looking promotional calendar built around the global release slate and key trading events.
  • Use core business systems, advanced Excel and AI powered tools to analyse performance trends and react quickly through our eCommerce levers.

To be successful in this role, you should be:

  • University Degree qualified in a relevant field (Commerce, Business, Engineering, Supply Chain or similar)
  • Experienced  with Category ownership, either a Junior Category Manager or Category Manager level
  • Experience withing an eCommerce, Retail or FMCG environment and / or Tech & Electronics categories such as Laptops, Monitors, Tablets, Phones, Drones, Computer Accessories
  • Comfortable building and maintaining effective relationships, through exceptional communication and engagement
  • Highly analytical and possess commercial nous, being able to recognise opportunity and make quick decisions for the best commercial outcomes, so that we can offer market-leading pricing to our customers.
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Being agile and adaptable is key to success!
  • A whiz with Microsoft Excel (we’re talking VLOOKUP and pivot tables, not SUM and AVERAGE - and we will test your capabilities).
  • Tech savvy and able to use various IT and cloud-based tools to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Ready to challenge, be challenged, and work within our highly disruptive business model.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
