About the role

We’re looking for a Associate Engineer with hands-on experience, who’s confident enough to work semi-independently in a small engineering team.

This position is ideal for someone with a background in website development rather than pure product engineering. You’ll work closely with designers, content creators and stakeholders across the business, translating design intent and content needs into clean, accessible and reliable front-end experiences.

You’ll collaborate directly with non-technical teams, strong communication is essential. You’ll need to clearly articulate what you’re working on, explain technical decisions in straightforward language, and proactively support colleagues who depend on the website to do their best work.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist Engineers with user interface development and implementation of design patterns.
  • Attend development meetings and contribute to discussions around feature behaviour, usability and frontend implications.
  • Work on smaller UI updates or bug fixes independently, and pair with more senior Engineers on complex or high-impact features.
  • Gather information from users and internal stakeholders to understand how frontend changes affect real workflows.
  • Conduct development tests, including rendering checks, responsive behaviour testing and accessibility validations.
  • Gradually take ownership of writing, testing and maintaining frontend features according to industry best practices.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by your manager as part of a flexible, collaborative engineering team.

What we’re looking for

  • 1–2 years of experience in frontend development (or equivalent internship or project experience).
  • Exposure to modern frontend technologies such as React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS or component libraries.
  • Interest in building accessible, user-friendly interfaces that align with best UI/UX practices.
  • Ability to translate requirements and designs into structured, maintainable frontend code.
  • Some experience with testing tools or techniques for frontend behaviour and performance.
  • Wordpress, while not essential, is a plus.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
