Job Description

You report into the Martech Solutions Architect and work day-to-day with the Engineering Team and Analytics team, who set technical design and standards, and with the analytics and client management teams who own measurement strategy and the client relationship.

Marketing measurement only works if someone keeps it working. Tags fire, servers run, pipelines land data at three in the morning, and when one of them stops, a client loses visibility of their business. The MarTech Engineer implements that plumbing and keeps it healthy.

The role sits across two things that are usually held by different people. On one side, tagging and measurement implementation: data layers, GTM web and server-side, GA4, conversion APIs and consent. On the other side, the cloud services those implementations run on: containers, scheduled functions, alerting and the daily reality of keeping a managed estate up. If you have run server-side tagging in production, you have probably already done both.

You will work alongside a MarTech Solutions Architect who owns solution design. Your job is to implement it, run it, and be the person who notices when something is wrong before the client does.

Responsibilities

  • Keep a managed estate of client services healthy: monitoring, alert response, scaling, container and server updates, and backfills when something has gone wrong.

  • Implement tagging and measurement: data layer specifications, GTM web and server-side containers, GA4 configuration, conversion APIs and consent.

  • Deploy server-side GTM environments from established templates and patterns, and improve those templates as you go.

  • Diagnose and fix contained measurement faults: duplicated or missing transactions, discrepancies between web and server implementations, page location capture, revenue mismatches.

  • QA and validate tracking before it goes live, and after platform changes.

  • Keep documentation, alerting and runbooks current, so the estate does not depend on one person's memory.

  • Communicate with client managers and clients directly about incidents, changes and what they mean.

  • Escalate genuinely architectural problems to the Solutions Architect rather than working around them, and know the difference.

  • Automate the repetitive parts of your own job so the estate scales without the headcount scaling with it.

Technical Environment

  • Cloud. Google Cloud: Cloud Run, App Engine, Cloud Functions, Cloud Scheduler, Pub/Sub, Workflows, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and the logging, monitoring and alerting that sits across them. Some clients run their own environments, so working inside someone else's estate with limited access is part of the job.

  • Measurement. Server-side GTM as a production platform. GTM web containers, GA4, data layer design and implementation, conversion APIs, consent mode and consent management platforms.

  • Languages and tooling. SQL for investigating data issues. JavaScript for tag templates and custom variables. Python for cloud functions and automation. Version control, and ideally some infrastructure as code.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Hands-on experience implementing tagging in production, covering both GTM web and server-side, and writing or specifying data layers rather than only consuming them.

  • Practical GA4 configuration and debugging, including the ability to explain why two numbers disagree.

  • Genuine comfort in a cloud console: deploying a container, reading logs, setting an alert policy, working out why a scheduled job failed. Google Cloud preferred, but AWS or Azure experience transfers.

  • A methodical approach to diagnosing measurement discrepancies. Most of the hard problems in this role look like a number being slightly wrong.

  • SQL good enough to interrogate raw event data.

  • Clear written communication with people who are not technical, particularly when something has broken.

  • A temperament that finds satisfaction in a clean incident log. This role is judged on things not going wrong, which suits some people and frustrates others.

Valuable

  • JavaScript or Python beyond configuration, enough to build a custom template or a small cloud function.

  • Infrastructure as code, CI/CD, or any background in making deployment repeatable.

  • Conversion API implementations and consent management in a regulated or privacy-sensitive context.

  • Experience running measurement across a portfolio of clients rather than a single estate, where the constraint is breadth and prioritisation rather than depth.

  • Google Cloud certification, or equivalent evidence of structured cloud knowledge.

Note: We emphasise skills, expertise and behavioural attributes over years of experience and traditional degrees. If you want to join our collaborative team, we invite you to apply today with your resume in English.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
